OPINION: Solar Power Is The Way Forward For Australia

Article thanks to http://www.asianscientist.com/features/martin-green-unsw-opinion-solar-power-for-australia-2012/

Something extraordinary happened to the German national power grid during the pleasantly mild early weeks of last summer. Not only did Germany`s nearly one million mainly roof top (photovoltaic) solar panels pump 13.2 gigawatts into the grid - the equivalent output of up to a dozen nuclear power plants, or about 40 percent of the maximum ever demand in Australia`s National Electricity Market - but they did so at exactly the right time. Next-gen solar tech makes big leagues

Article thanks to http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-57360884-54/next-gen-solar-tech-makes-big-leagues/

A solar farm in California will be the largest to use an emerging type of thin-film solar technology, another competitive force bringing down the price of solar. Japan-based Solar Frontier will supply solar panels built with solar cells that use a combination of copper, indium, and selenide. The project, which will produce 150 megawatts at peak times, will be in Kearn County, California and is expected to be completed next June. [...]

Article thanks to http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/ipad/bn-turbine-deal-to-power-225000-homes/story-fn6bqphm-1226125999240

A $1.3 BILLION wind farm that could generate a quarter of the state's power will be built on Yorke Peninsula. The wind farm, to be located about 20km southwest of Ardrossan, near Pine Point, will generate up to 600 megawatts of electricity a day, which is about 25 per cent of the state's daily consumption. It will provide enough power for 225,000 homes a year. [...]

Region in a solar eclipse

Article thanks to http://www.portnews.com.au/news/local/news/general/region-in-a-solar-eclipse/2144686.aspx

AS POWER prices continue to scale new heights, renewable energy such as solar power is becoming an increasingly popular alternative in our town. The Clean Energy Council (CEC) counted 759 installations of solar panels in Port Macquarie last year - equating to 5.08 per cent of households using solar energy, a mid-range percentage in NSW. The state is leading the way in renewable energy, with the biggest growth in solar-power system use in Australia. Some 32,196 solar power systems were installed in NSW last year, compared to 13,875 in 2009. Queensland came in second, with 25,594 systems installed last year. [...]

The base-load myth

Article thanks to http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/97696.html

To every complex problem there is a simplistic response, which is usually wrong. For instance, to the challenge of generating all of Australia`s electricity from renewable energy, the deniers and scoffers repeatedly utter the simplistic myth that renewable energy is intermittent and therefore cannot generate base-load (that is, 24-hour) power. South Australia's Solar Feed In Tariff Changes Legislation Tabled

Article thanks to http://www.energymatters.com.au/index.php?main_page=news_article&article_id=1443

There`s good news and bad news for solar supporters in South Australia. Legislation has finally been tabled that, if passed, will see the feed in tariff rate increase to a very generous 54c per kilowatt hour, plus an additional amount from electricity retailers. The bad news is the scheme will close to new connections later this year. South Australia`s Minister for Energy Michael O`Brien announced yesterday the Government has decided to change the previously announced cut-off point, which was a total scheme capacity of 60 megawatts, with a closure date of midnight on 30 September 2011. Talk of carbon price puts solar on front burner for Australian home owners

Article thanks to http://www.newsmaker.com.au/news/8171

Sydney Olympic Park, 31 March 2011: Australian clean energy company SilexSolar has ramped up production of solar cells and modules by 300% at its Sydney Olympic Park plant, driven by household demand. Australia`s only manufacturer of solar cells, SilexSolar recently introduced a new factory direct online service for retailers of PV panels, cutting costs for energy-conscious consumers and maintaining a competitive edge against imported solar modules. SilexSolar General Manager Rod Seares said that the success of SilexSolarDirect (http://www.silexsolardirect.com.au) combined with high profile media discussions around the carbon tax were driving awareness of the benefits of clean power. Race to cash in on solar bonus

Article thanks to http://smh.domain.com.au/blogs/talking-property/race-to-cash-in-on-solar-bonus-20110322-1c4gu.html

There is a last-minute rush from homeowners wanting to buy solar panels before the solar credits rebate is slashed by up to $1200 from July. Some solar installers are so busy they have declared their books full and are turning away customers. Solar Shop Australia, one of the nation's largest providers of grid-connected solar power systems, says it has stopped taking bookings for installations before July in South Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
